Sunflowers and Blueberries

Greetings from the Loire! Gourmet Girl Denise here with the latest from Le Petit Saint Barnabé.

A couple of weeks ago I got a call from my friend Alexia who lives here in Mouliherne. She wanted to go blueberry picking and wanted to know if I wanted to go along. Of course, I said yes, having never been to a blueberry farm nor plucked and significant amount of fruit from a blueberry bush. The shrubs were about 4 and a half feet tall and loaded with fruit! I have never seen anything like it!

The farm provided the flats and charged 5 euros per kilogram. This flat was not yet full and weighed 2 kilos.

I bought 4 kilos for me and 2 kilos for my friends at the Moulin Bregeon. They freeze beautifully and don’t stick together as long as you don’t wash them prior to freezing them. I have two large freezer bags full in my chest freezer. I already made an apricot/blueberry tart (sorry1 no pic) and plan to lookup more recipes throughout the year. Try them in pancakes and of course, there is always blueberry pie. A la mode, please!

Here in northwest France, there are fields everywhere blooming with sunflowers. They harvest the seeds for oil later in the year, but for now, their sunny faces are making me smile.
